Response to the client brief

Explanation of demographics:

The target audience would be ages 16 - 24 years. Three key elements that we would include are swearing, violence and suspense. An advantage of picking an age group of 16 - 24 years old is, we are allowed to use as much violence and visual images to engage this specific audience for the movie trailer we are going to create. Another advantage to making the movie trailer is that as we are the producers, we can understand the audience better. This means that it will allow us to make something that is more relatable to the target audience. A challenge that we may face is when approaching this audience is that it may be difficult to make them understand what we're trying to portray. This is due to the likes and dislikes of the audiences and will therefore not be attracting to everyone in that target audience. Another challenge that we are going to face when making this movie trailer is the weather This means that there would be some days we will not be able to film. This will therefore make the deadline of the project to possibly be delayed. Finally another challenge that we may face is editing. This is because we might have the correct software to edit the movie trailer.

Conventions:

The thriller conventions we will include into our work are enigma, plot twists and many different aspects which would be made up of sub-genres that would be created. One way the conventions will be met will be revealed near the end of the movie trailer to keep the audience on the edge. This will allow more excitement in the trailer and will draw more audiences to watch it.

Industry requirements:

The institutions our thriller film will be produced by is 21st century fox and Lionsgate. Some regulatory issues that we will consider and use when creating the movie trailer is ASA, Ofcom and BBFC. We will use these regulatory issues in the UK as a baseline for what we know what to include and which is not allowed in the UK. This will also allow us to see what we need to get permission from and who.  Some institutional information that the text must include is the age rating. This is because this will show the target audience of the film and also tell customers that if they are below the age of that certain age rating, they will need to be accompanied by an adult.

Medium:

The medium we would be working in is the film industry. The type of text we are producing within that medium is a trailer. The type of genre that would fit into the trailer the best is a thriller.

opening sequences

Thriller opening sequences

TRAINSPOTTING INTRO:

Why is the protagonist so careless?

How did he get into the chase situation in the beginning and why?

What problems will the protagonist face?

The opening sequence of a film is to create a eye-catching entrance to the film, as they attract the audience so they'll continue watching whilst the characters are getting introduced and narrative.

Conventions of Opening Sequences:

Introducing Themes/Ideology - With the introduction of the themes; the audience gets to know the symbolism of the film. It also helps introducing the narrative.

Introducing Characters - When the characters get introduced in the opening sequence; the audience get's to know what their roles are in the film (protagonist, villain, helper, etc).

Introducing Narrative - When the narrative is introduced in the opening sequence, it helps the audience become aware on what will be expected.

Engaging music - It is very significant in the opening sequence to have engaging music, so that the audience is engaged. It helps emphasises each of the scenes; from the tense plucked strings to the dramatic orchestra. Since the music builds up from the music the audience becomes tense.

Non-Linear Start - Using a Non-Linear start engages the audience and helps them becomes intrigued  on what's happening and they'll continue to watch what's happening since they'll be curious about the situation shown.

Analysis of themes in thriller Coraline

Themes in Thriller

The key themes that occur in the trailer are: escape, violence, fear

Film: Coraline

In the trailer we are able to see how Coraline goes into a tunnel into a new world with new parents. This shows us how Coraline escapes reality from going thought the tunnel. She want's to escape from all her problems and live a nice happy life instead of the miserable one. We can see how the film effects the audience since they'll be very interested in what's going to happen next in the film. The film creates excitement since there is a portal to another reality so people would be very interested and want to know what's going to happen there. The further we get into the trailer more enigma we have to know what's going on in the trailer.

Escape:

The key theme escape, we are able to see how Coraline has to escape the old reality and save the souls otherwise evil would take over her. She feels like she needs to escape her reality to get rid of all her worries from life. She want's to be a stress free child as we can from the trailer. In the trailer it says "everything is so good" showing us Coraline is satisfied to escape as long as she has no worries.

Violence :

Another key theme violence we are able to see in the trailer in multiple ways, the other mother discipline Coraline. In the trailer the other mother says "You could stay here forever... but theirs one tiny thing you have to do" showing us the audience the buttons. This could show us how everything is about to start and not what everything is what anything is seen at the start of the trailer. The violence of sowing buttons in Coraline's eyes puts the audience on the edge of their seats.

Fear:

Another key theme is fear, we are able to see this in the trailer when Coraline feels uneasy about the other mother, and having a big responsibility to save the souls. In the trailer we can also see one of the souls saying "You are in danger Coraline" showing us the fear Coraline has for everything she is about to go through and what she should expect from all of it.

All these themes effect the audience how they feel, they're able to feel the emotions in the trailer, and get interested in. As we can see the key themes of violence and escape is clearly denoted in the trailer and narrated. As we can see in the image provided, Coraline is introduced into this new reality, and she's seeking escapism, although she's feeling scared she's willing to go ahead and go inside the tunnel. The colours of the tunnel being blue and purple helps Coraline know that the meaning of the colour means be aware on what may happen since purple is supposed to alert you to know that what you're getting into is a hazard.
